Renowned artist Bernard Jackson invites audiences to explore a groundbreaking visual narrative in his solo exhibition, "Angels Amongst Us," curated by Lyrric Jackson. Hosted at Gallery 72 in collaboration with Dashboard, Atlanta Arts & Entertainment, and the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs in downtown Atlanta, this transformative showcase challenges prevailing stereotypes and celebrates the gentle resilience and authentic joy of Black men.
Jackson's visionary collection offers a modern perspective on Black masculinity, juxtaposing contemporary race discourse with a reimagined portrayal of blackness in the media. Through an array of mediums including fashion photography, makeup art, wearable design, jewelry design, oil/acrylic on canvas, and fabrications, "Angels Amongst Us" crafts an alternative atmosphere that challenges conventional narratives, steering away from the often sensationalized and violent depictions of Black men.
The artwork navigates themes of identity, representation, and power dynamics, drawing inspiration from historical contexts such as Blackness in Renaissance Art and the impact of colonialism on artistic representation. Through Jackson's masterful execution, the exhibition invites viewers to confront preconceived notions and embrace a more sensitive, honest, and positive portrayal of people of color.
